🔥 Private Mutale – Brave Under Fire 🔥
Private Mutale was a young soldier from Chinsali, who joined the army in 1930.
During a fierce battle, his section came under heavy enemy artillery fire. Following orders, he and his fellow soldiers left their position and moved upslope to take cover near their European platoon sergeant.
While others stayed hidden, Mutale saw the enemy's fire slow down. He quickly ran forward to a better position and began shooting. Then, he noticed something important — the powerful Lewis machine gun had been left behind in the chaos.
He knew it could make a big difference.
Without being told, Mutale bravely ran back, right into the open, where enemy bullets from two machine guns and several rifles were flying. He grabbed the Lewis gun and its ammunition and returned under fire, bleeding from his mouth and neck.
Still, he kept fighting until he was too weak to continue.
For this incredible bravery, Private Mutale was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal — one of the highest honors a soldier could receive.
Mutale's story reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of Zambia's forgotten war heroes — young men who risked everything, not for fame, but for duty.
