Further Expansion of ZNS

On 20 December 1971, Zambia took a bold step. The Zambia Youth Service was dissolved, and in its place, the Zambia National Service (ZNS) was born — a fully-fledged military organisation designed to defend the nation and build it at the same time.
But there was a challenge: ZNS was new and needed experienced leadership. To guide it, the Government called on the Zambia Army to provide officers who would help shape the Service in its early years.
The First Commandant
The very first Commandant of ZNS was Colonel C. J. Nyirenda. He came from the Zambia Army, and soon after his appointment, he was promoted to Brigadier General. Alongside him were other pioneers — officers like Majors H. M. Kabinga, A. Kunsenama, S. F. Mulenga, F. G. Sibamba, and Captain D. Lubasi. Together, they built the foundations of a disciplined and respected Service.
Leadership Through the Years
Since 1971, ZNS has been led by some of Zambia's most outstanding military officers. Commandants have come both from the Zambia Army and the ZNS itself, each leaving their mark on the Service's history.

Brig Gen C. J. Nyirenda (1971–1976) – The pioneer.
-
Maj Gen T. M. Fara (1980–1988) – Expanded training programmes.
-
